What does the role of a Mentor look like?
As a mentor, you are responsible for providing guidance, support, and feedback to your mentee. Your role is to:
- Share your knowledge, skills and experiences
- Help your mentee navigate challenges & overcome obstacles.
- Act as a trusted advisor, offeirng a sounding board for ideas and solutions.
- Encourage professional growth by setting clear development goals.
- Inspire your mentee to expand their potential & broaden their horizons
While mentoring, it is essential that you maintain a balance between guiding the mentee and giving them space to grow and find their own solutions
What does the role of a Mentee look like?
As a mentee, your role is to actively engage in the mentoring relationship and take responsibility for your development. You are the one who drives your growth and must be proactive in your approach to learning and improving. Your responsibilities include:
- Setting clear goals – for your personal & professional development.
- Being open – to feedback & suggestions.
- Being proactive – in scheduling meetings & ensuring the mentoring process stays on track.
Reflecting on your progress – & adapting to feedback.
Remember, your mentor is there to guide and support you, but ultimately, you are responsible for your own development.
How It Works
- Sign Up: Employees can sign up as a mentor, mentee, or both
- Matching Process: Mentors & mentees are paired based on their goals, interests & experience.
- Kick-Off: Participants receive guidelines and attend an initial sessions to set expectations.
- Ongoing Meetings: Pairs meet regularly with check-ins from the programme coordinator.
- Wrap-up & Feedback: At the end of the programme, participants share feedback and achievements.

- Open to all employees, regardless of department or seniority.
- Ideal for those looking to grow professionally or support others in their career journey.

Mentoring Best Practices
Mentors:
- Set Clear Expectations:
- Define the mentee’s goals early
- Align on the structure of your meetings
- Be An Active Listener:
- Give your full attention
- Ask open-ended questions
- Offer thoughtful feedback
- Provide Guidance, Not Answers:
- Help mentees think critically rather than giving direct solutions.
- Share Your Experience:
- Offer insights from your career journey, including challenges and lessons learned.
- Encourage Growth:
- Help mentees step outside their comfort zones
- Set achievable milestones.
- Respect Confidentiality:
- Build a trusting relationship by keeping discussions private.
Mentees:
- Come Prepared:
- Have questions and topics ready for discussion for each mentoring session.
- Be Open to Feedback:
- Constructive criticism helps you grow – embrace it!
- Take Initiative:
- Drive the relationship by scheduling meetings and following up.
- Set SMART goals:
- Define Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound objectives.
- Be Respectful of Time:
- Stick to agreed-upon schedules
- Communicate any conflicts early
- Apply What You Learn:
- Take action based on discussions
- Track your progress
- Show Appreciation:
- A simple thank-you goes a long way in maintaining a strong mentor-mentee relationship

Once we have identified both mentors and mentees we will arrange training for the mentors and begin the ‘pairing’ exercise to ensure a good match.
